Aesthetic Operations
2025

What came before the chicken? What came before the drone equipped with a 4k GoPro? A drone with an infrared sensor-camera for anti-aircraft operations during WWII.

Online culture ( especially ) loves an aesthetic / a ‘core’, and it’s a great way to commodify things, too. By applying literal aesthetics to operative images and vice versa, this video examines the processes of aestheticization and commodification regarding surveillance and military objects, and how the functions of these images ‘re-operationalize’ and potentially ease their way into our lives more seamlessly.
The latter part of the video reflects on the gaze of the machine-eye that creates and analyzes working images. It’s easy to get lost in the hazy skies of a meandering Reaper drone, so the final section - one juxtaposing the vision of a machine ( ChatGPT ) and what we see of the same footage - grounds and, perhaps, marks the space between the human and the operational.

Society of the Leopard Print

The story of the leopard skin / print historically has its highs and lows. First worn by kings and queens - a symbol of power and wealth; in the 50s on famous Hollywood movie stars, then introduced to the mainstream as something that shouldn't be worn by those who are ‘fair and sweet’; in the late 60s condemned by the anti-fur movement, reintroduced as a print in the 70s, and finally worn and furnished with caution to this day.

The video is a point in the cycle it’s taking - the meaning of the leopard print reformed and questioned with all-too-familiar objects and situations.

2022

While staying at a hostel during my first month in Rotterdam, I talked to some strangers about things you talk about while staying at a hostel, including our first experiences of the ongoing housing crisis.

This video captures the faces and voices that are bound to slowly disappear, but also the stories that stay.
